a life before adoption
A narrative of an adoptee’s journey and memories of a life before adoption. This is a story for children experiencing change in their family dynamics and environments.
Description
Maya , a life before adoption, is a narrative story of a little girl’s memories of her birth home. Many adoptees remember their homes, families, and nations, pre-adoption, but have not been allowed the space in their new environments to explore, celebrate, embrace their genetic beginnings, or mourn the loss of their familiar surroundings.
Through this story AlmaLuz hopes to shed light on the grief and loss adoptees experience through ingrained memories and to give adoptees the encouragement to voice their own memories.
Maya is a celebration of her memories and cultural identity.
Learn what memories lay hidden in Maya’s journey to emotional healing as she shows you the beauty of her nation, Honduras, and all the vibrancy of life within it.
Meet the Author
AlmaLuz is the owner of AlmaLuz Graphics Publishing and illustrations.
AlmaLuz is also the author of the Maya Series of adoption stories. These stories give voice to adoptees who have experienced trauma through extreme life changes.
As an adoptee trauma survivor, AlmaLuz hopes to bring awareness to adoption trauma many adoptees experience throughout our lives. Adoption for many adoptees doesn’t just happen as a onetime experience but is a trauma that impacts us from the moment we are adopted to our very present moments. Adoptees experience the trauma of losing a family, a history, cultural identity, and a sense of self through the adoption process.
Through the Maya series, AlmaLuz hopes to illuminate the emotional, psychological, and social challenges adoptees experience, the “Silent Trauma”. Adoption is not an event but a life experience that many adoptees have to navigate without the support they need to adjust within a foreign environment. As a voice for the adoptees AlmaLuz desires to help adoption and foster family realize the needs and support adoptees require for healthy relationships and development. Maya’s stories will open the eyes of the reader to the challenges a transnational adoptee encounters as she learns to navigate an environment foreign to her. Maya’s journey in adoption healing includes cross cultural and national acceptance of herself and her environment.
My hope is to encourage adoptees feel seen, heard, and celebrated.

Reviews
The book, 'Maya: A Life Before Adoption,' is a valuable resource for those who have experienced the complexities of adoption and trauma. The author's testimonies about adoption and trauma offer a raw and honest perspective on the subject, having gone through the same challenges themselves.
I loved the bright bold pictures. I think it is written well for a child to understand and that the end may end like it does for the therapy session to start.

This book can benefit both children and adults, as it allows them to relate to others' experiences and find healing and validation in their journey.

Beautiful colors and imagery with the story. I like adding the facts and info about Honduras, it connects you to where Maya came from and is educational
